Diamond Head Crater Summit Trail
Starting in November of last year, the Hawaii State Parks Division has been repairing the 1.6-mile long, Diamond Head Crater Summit Trail on Hawaii’s Oahu.
Diamond Head Crater Summit Trail is the popular hiking / walking trail and one of the most popular activities for both locals and visitors.
As the most popular hiking trail in all of Hawaii, Diamond Head Crater Summit Trail is used by more than 1.3 million people annually.
Now that the three-month trail repair project has ended, three-month trail repair project has returned to its regular visiting hours – daily from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The recent repairs on the Diamond Head Crater Summit Trail became necessary because of heavy use plus the erosion of the crater’s vertical rock faces.
There are additional repairs planned by the Hawaii State Parks Division, including the summit’s lookout-area and building a new summit loop trail.

Diamond Head Crater Summit Trail
Actually, the Hawaiian name for Diamond Head crater is Leahi.
The Diamond Head Crater Summit Trail was first built back in 1906. The purpose wasn’t as a hiking trail but became a part of the Oahu island’s coastal defense system.
The hike to the top of Diamond Head is moderate, so be sure to bring along water and take needed breaks along the way. But once you reach the summit, the views of Oahu and beautiful Pacific Ocean are unbelievable.
