The remains of a historic 150-year old sugar mill is located in downtown area of Koloa on Kauai.

This was the first sugar mill in all the Hawaiian Islands.

Back in September of 1835, William Hooper planted twelve acres of sugar cane.

The cane was then harvested and delivered to this Koloa sugar mill by ox-cart. This process ended in 1882 when the sugar mill train was built.

All that remains today of the once prosperous crop is a historic 30-foot chimney stack and a portion of the actual sugas mill foundation. You can also find a plaque that’s dedicated to the many hard working sugar plantation workers.

Directions:
Exit Highway 520 (South) from Highway 50 and go toward Po’ipu. Koloa Town is about three miles down the road. The sugar mill is located downtown, in a grass park off of Weliweli Road.
