Papohaku Beach, Molokai

by Luxe Living on May 26, 2008

Unforgettable Papohaku Beach on Molokai in Hawaii, is also known as “Three Mile Beach.”

Any tourist visiting Molokai will probably hear about this beach before they arrive. This three-mile strip of white sand beach, is the pride and joy of Molokai.

Getting to it isn’t easy, as it’s all the way out on the West End, past the Kaluakoi Hotel. However, once there, most visitors want to stay awhile.

While the sand is closer to gold than white, it is soft, warm and inviting. The waves are great during the summer (use caution during the winter).

Papohaku is one of the longest and finest beaches in the Hawaiian Islands. This beach extends over three miles of coastline and is more than 300 yards wide.

Even though the beach is beautiful, it is often deserted and it is not uncommon to find yourself alone in paradise here.

Strong tradewinds coming from the west can whip up the sand along this long beach making it quite uncomfortable during windy weather.

Directions: Take Highway 460 west toward Maunaloa. Turn right on Kaluakoi Road before you reach the town. Continue on Kaluakoi Road, past the entrance to the Kaluakoi Resort. Papohaku Beach is two miles past the resort entrance.
