Na Pali Coast Kauai

The spectacular Na Pali Coast is the rugged coastline on the north-west shore of Kauai, Hawaii’s oldest inhabited island. It is part of the Nā Pali Coast State Park which encompasses 6,175 acres (20 km2) of land and is located on the northwest side of Kauai. The park established to protect the Kalalau Valley.

Along with Waimea Canyon, the  Na Pali Coast is possibly the most remarkable and popular feature for tourists who visit the lush Garden Isle.

The Na Pali Coast extends from Ke’e Beach and runs about 16 miles southwest to Polihale State Park. Much of the jagged coast is inaccessible because of the sheer cliffs, which rise up to 4,000 feet high, and plummet directly into the deep blue Pacific Ocean below.

These pali, or cliffs, provide a rugged grandeur of deep and narrow valleys, abruptly ending at the ocean. Scenic waterfalls and quick flowing streams continue to cut into these narrow valleys. At the same time, the ocean carves away the cliffs at their mouths. Extensive stone walled terraces can be found on the valley bottoms. This is where the original Hawaiians once lived and harvested taro. Taro is a tropical plant grown primarily as a vegetable food for its edible corm.

There are no roads in or along the Na Pali Coast, and is only accessible by hiking, boating, kayaking or from a helicopter. Hiking and boating are the best methods to experience these magnificent cliffs, warm vibrant blue water, sea caves, mystical waterfalls and other natural wonders.

The most popular hike on Na Pali is to Hanakapi’ai where hikers will find a tropical river valley. First you hike about 8 miles (round-trip) to a waterfall or 4 miles (round-trip) to Hanakapi’ai Beach. Beware visiting the beach as ever changing ocean conditions can be dangerous and no lifeguards are available. The beach is only there during summer months.

For most backpackers in good condition hiking the 11 miles takes a full day. Get a lot of rest before hand, bring plenty of water. It’s also best to begin your hike early, to avoid overexertion in the warm and humid midday heat.
