Makena State Park comprises 165 coastal acres of south of Wailea on the island of Maui, Hawaii. The largest beach, also known as “Big Beach” is 1.5 miles long and more than 100 feet wide.
Makena State Park includes a large, white-sand beach, and Pu’u Ola’i cinder cone. The cinder cone is the most prominent feature of this state park and lies north of the beach area. A lifeguard is on duty but beware of a dangerous shore break.
“Little Beach” nearby, is one of the few beaches on the Hawaiian Islands where nude sunbathing is tolerated by local police. Another option is Red Sand Beach, located near Hāna.
To access the site travel to the end of Wailea Alanui Road.

I was married on Big Beach in 2002 at 6:30 AM on September 21st. The waves were perfect, the moon setting and the sun rising brought a new day and a new start to my life. Perfection in our lives do not happen often but this beach at that time was perfect. Thank the state of Hawaii for keeping the beaches free, parks free, and making it possible for anyone to use this amenity. Mahalo
