Canoe Beach – Hanakaoo Beach Park, Maui

by Lux Living on June 19, 2008

Canoe Beach is the county beach park that is just south of Ka’anapali Beach in Lahaina. The beach is connected to Ka’anapali Beach; only the name changes as you go north.

Unlike Ka’anapali Beach, however, Canoe Beach has no hotels, no shops, no restaurants, and few tourists. If you’re looking for a relatively undeveloped beach in Lahaina with ample parking and lifeguards, this beach is a good choice.

The beach gets its name from the many Hawaiian outrigger canoes on shore. This beach is the launching point for many of the canoe clubs on Maui, including the Kahana Canoe Club, the Lahaina Canoe Club, and the Napili Canoe Club.

You may get to see paddlers practicing or even racing here. Canoe beach is also a good place to launch a sea kayak or sailboat from.

To get to Canoe Beach, take the Honoapi’ilana Highway (State Route 30) through Lahaina. Turn left into the parking lot between mile marker 23 and 24. There’s a graveyard visible from the road just past the entrance to the park.

The Blue Yonder Beach Services offers beach activities and equipment rentals, and is just a short walk north from Canoe Beach, near the Drums of the Pacific Luau.  Source: Maui Beach Guide
